HelloMarkus Observatory

The Observatory of local business visibility

A public measure, city by city, of how local businesses are found on Google and Google Maps: their profiles, their reviews, and who ranks at the top. One trade to start with, takeaways, in 20 French cities. The measure is repeated every quarter.

A French barometer, explained

The figures on this page describe takeaways in French cities, measured on their Google profiles, with searches typed in French, in France. They say nothing yet about businesses in the United Kingdom. Why read them from here? Because the method travels: the same Google, the same profiles, the same reviews. What sets the businesses at the top apart in Lyon is worth checking on your own street.

The London pilot

The same method, one British city first. The measure is being prepared: no figure until it has been taken and checked.

What stands out

The same figures, city after city. The median of the cities measured, and the range from the lowest to the highest.

No reviews at all 21.2%

In the median city, one in five takeaways has no Google review yet. Depending on the city, from 6% to 25.7%.

Unanswered reviews 71.3%

In the median city, seven in ten reviews go unanswered. Depending on the city, from 57.9% to 82.8%.

Incomplete profiles 46.6%

In the median city, nearly one in two profiles is incomplete. Depending on the city, from 34.4% to 56.4%.

Unclaimed profiles 32.1%

In the median city, one in three profiles has not been claimed by its owner. Depending on the city, from 15.9% to 41.9%.

What puts a business at the top varies from city to city

In 11 cities out of 20, the takeaways in the top three on Google Maps have more reviews than the median takeaway in their city. Their rating, though, stays close to the average in 11 cities out of 20.

Every neighbourhood has its own top three

From five points in the same city, a search for “fast food” shows 14 different businesses in the top three, in the median city. Being found is decided street by street.

The cities measured

In alphabetical order: this is not a ranking. Each city has its page, with its districts or postcodes and what the businesses at the top have.
